NUFF 2008 - Election ViolenceElection Violence

Short documentary Kenya  2007  5 min
Producer Julius Mwelu
Director Julius Mwelu
Screenplay Julius Mwelu
Director of photography Julius Mwelu

The film was made during the election violence in Nairobi. Most of the violence was in the Slum areas of Nairobi and the filmmaker was there in the action as it happened. The film is a journey through the eyes of the filmmaker of the extreme levels of violence that took place in Nairobi.

About the director:
I am 23 years old I come from one of the biggest slum in Africa, that’s Mathare slum. Most of my times I like to spend playing soccer and taking photographs of life in Mathare. One thing that I don't like about life is being idle. Therefore I have always tried to follow my role models, the most important of which is my mother. There are six of us in our family and I am the second youngest. My father died of malaria in 1994 when I was ten years old and I always feel very sorry for my mother, who always truly loved and respected him. The place where we live is commonly referred to as the home of crime, prostitution and drug abuse. Last year I celebrated my birthday, which, due to high child mortality, high crime rate and drug abuse, is not a very common thing to do in Mathare. My friends and I used to joke about the fact that in Mathare, there are essentially more reasons to die than to live. Behind the eyes and faces of the inhabitants, behind the walls and doors of theirs dwellings lie incredible testimonies and cries of despair. However, there is also a formidable energy and will to survive in these people. Herein lies the future of the Mathare slum. This energy, this will to survive is a constant reminder to me that we need to invest in the youth of today if we want to create some kind of future for the youths of tomorrow, the youths of Mathare, and for the youths of the world.

At twelve I took my first picture and since then I have never looked back. Photography became my passion and through the years I worked hard to improve my skill. It has been my goal to share the pains and joys of the people of Mathare with the world. Because of this I have documented horrific scenes but also the happy scenes of the strong people of Mathare.

Through the years I have come to appreciate the benefits of photography and I wanted to share my passion with the children of Mathare.  I started the Mwelu Foundation to train and empower young boys and girls to express themselves with the camera to show the world how they perceive the world as I have. I am optimistic that our life, our dreams and our hopes will not be lost as I am taking picture of my country and so are the forty five other children of the Mwelu foundation. Documenting our lives as we live.

About the director:
Born in 1984, Robin lives in south-west England, in the Devon countryside where he grew up. His love of the cinema and filmmaking grew out of an earlier interest in drama and photography, and between 2000 and 2003 he made several short no-budget narrative films in his local area, some for a two-year Film and Video course at Exeter College. All his second-year films were awarded 100% marks, but he did not try to get them shown anywhere at the time, thinking of them as just practice.
He then spent three years studying for an Ancient History degree, graduating with First Class Honours in 2006. During this time at University he also continued with his other passion, still photography.
In 2007-2008 several of Robin’s films were screened at short film festivals in the UK, and broadcast on Propeller TV across Europe. 'Motion' was awarded ‘Best Sound’ at the 2007 Leicester International Short Film Festival.
He has started making short films again, and hopes to go to film school in the near future.

PERUVIAN FILM

Lecture & films presented by Dante Luza, Lima

Media has placed in people around the world one distinctive image of what Peru looks like: an Andean peasant walking a llama surrounded by a breathtaking landscape with high snowy peaks at the back and maybe ruins from an ancient culture somewhere in this picture. But Peru is more than this postcard simplification, it is a diverse, multicultural, full of contradictions and complex society which young Peruvian film makers have started, a few years ago, exploring and representing. They have portrayed characters and told stories from the diverse groups that conforms it, thus generating and new image of what we are.
