Evolution of Palestinian cinema - A Fractured Reality and a Diasporic Legacy
By Dr. Alia Arasoughly, Ramallah

The search for Palestinian history and identity requires a search into Palestinian cinema, for cinema did not only document a people’s history in the twentieth century but was a vital player in the formation of that very identity.  Palestinian cinema, like other national cinemas during periods of nation building or liberation struggles, held within its frame, narrative and cinematic language a history that refused but to be told, faces which demanded to be seen, and voices which broke a silence…the gaze and the eyes, those compelling elements of cinematic haunting sculpted in memory their presence and existence.  But how can we search for Palestinian cinema without seeing the films, how can we document cinema except through cinema?  Does Palestinian cinema exist without its archive, its history.

This talk will give an overview of the evolution of Palestinian cinema.

This seminar is supported by Fritt Ord and City of Tromsø - International Committee.

TIFF@NUFF – seminar on  activism and documentary
By Peter Rommel

Tromsø’s two international film festivals continue their collaboration. During NUFF 2011, TIFF presents a seminar with the German film producer Peter Rommel.

Peter Rommel is one of Germany’s most well-known and respected film producers. He has produced international prize-winning films such as SUMMER IN BERLIN (2006), LONGING (2007) and CLOUD 9 (2009), and he has been recently in Cannes with the new film STOPPED ON TRACK by director Andreas Dresen. Rommel will also be a workshop-leader at NUFF, supervising young filmmakers in producing a film from the idea to the result.

”Direct Cinema”, a specific approach to documentary filmmaking, will be the theme of the seminar. The seminar will cover the history of this approach, the conceptual basis, and how to adapt the approach to current reality and technical possibilities. The seminar is aimed towards NUFF participants as well as local/regional professionals.  As an example Rommel, will present the new documentary “STUTTGART 21 – DENK MAL!” by the young directors Lisa Sperling and Florian Kläger, and discuss activism and documentary film as a tool for political expression
The seminar is divided in two parts:

Part 1:  Screening of “STUTTGART 21 – DENK MAL!” with an introduction by Martha Otte (TIFF festival director), and followed by a question and answer session with the filmmakers and producer.
Part 2: A 5-hour seminar lead by Peter Rommel and the two directors.

The seminar is open for everybody, but capacity is limited. Registration is necessary.

Send name and contact details to info@tiff.no. Deadline June 15th.

The seminar is supported by Goethe Institute Norway, Nordnorsk Filmsenter, Fritt Ord and Inovasjon Norge.
