This year NUFF will be officially opened by the environmental organization Nature & Youth who is standing for the Friday school-strikes in Tromsø. NUFF wants to point out the right of youth to express themselves and underlines this with the screening of the winner of NUFF-Global in 2007, which was an international short film competition on the topic of “Climate Change”.

Climate change is real and happening now. Greenhouse Gas Emissions have never been higher and the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy offers 83 new production licenses on the Norwegian shelf. The climate crisis is real and one of today's most important issues and requires action.

Natur og Ungdom (Nature and Youth) is the largest environmental organization for youth in Norway, with more than 70 local groups working on environmental issues in their region. The best way to work for the environment is to work with local issues, take care of the world's species and by limit the man-made climate problems.

Natur og Ungdom is not only pointing out the challenges but also possible solutions and presses politicians and companies to take responsibility to solving the problems. We believe everyone has to work together to solve the environmental challenges in our world, fight the greatest polluters and stop those who destroy the environment.

If not we, who?
If not now, when?

In a world where everyone wears a mask, the person who does not and is still himself, is an outsider. To belong to the others the main character decides to wear the mask as well. As he puts it on, his heart stops and he begin to turn as grey as the rest of the humans. He is now a part of the grey mass of people. As he realizes this and tries to pull the mask off, it gets stuck to his face and he is unable to remove it. The main character realizes that he has lost his individuality and humanity once and for all.
The masks in this short film are a Symbol for the loss of your own identity and individuality. They conceal the true identity and eventually make you something entirely different than your true self. The movie displaces a critic towards our society where it has become so important to belong and to match an ideal that has been constructed by society. Due to that we lose sight of who we really are and do not stand up against everything that is going wrong in our modern society. Because fitting in is much easier than showing others your true self and criticizing norms.

Two men in a martial arts hall. The rules are simple, they are supposed to take each other down with physical contact, gain power over the other’s body and choke the other’s oxygen until he gives up. However, the fight soon changes into something else. The physical closeness opens up to a fight about trust, about being brave enough to open up, and to show how one really feels. Up Close is a film about men and the lack of physical closeness. Martial arts can be a free zone where physical contact between men is accepted and the film explores what can happen in such a place, where men find a closeness to each other and trust is created.

“I remember the handshake very clearly. My dad recorded the ceremony on video and would play it over and over again. He could not believe what had happened. In fact, none of us could. One time he threw his shoe at the TV and shouted so loud, the next door neighbors complained about him.” Listening to the last interview with Edward Said while watching the ceremony made me realize that father’s anger was because chairman Arafat was the first one to reach out his hand.

Director’s background:
Truls Svenningsson is 24 years old, lives in Gothenburg but grew up outside Umeå in north Sweden. He started in high school to make movie projects with his friends and it has been a major passion for him ever since. The projects quickly grew in ambitions but not in budgets and therefore resulted in some crazily exhausting feature length productions. Truls learned making films trying to pull off these projects with very little means and it was a good school to take even though the films didn't go so far. In co-production with "Film i Västerbotten", Truls wrote, directed and produced as a 21 year old, his first feature film: "Tjärnen Näck" (2016). 2017 – 2018 Truls worked as a DoP and editor on another low budget feature film: "Förgät mig ej" (2019). "Abla" is Truls first short film.
