NUFF 2025 Recap: The Future of Film, Lit by the Midnight Sun

The Future of Film, Lit by the Midnight Sun

From June 21st to 27th, Tromsø and Tvibit once again became a hub for young filmmakers from across the world as the Nordic Youth Film Festival (NUFF) unfolded under the glowing skies of the midnight sun. Over the course of seven days, NUFF 2025 brought together a vibrant community of creators, audiences, and mentors to share stories, develop skills, and celebrate the power of youth cinema.

The festival kicked off the first weekend with just under 40 films screened over two days at the beautiful and historic Verdensteatret cinema, followed by the international workshop, where 35 participants collaborated to make short films. With staff and mentors, the total group numbered 55. Hosted at Tvibit, Tromsø's cultural center for youth, the workshop was a whirlwind of writing, shooting, and editing, culminating in an emotional premiere at the historic Verdensteatret Kino. This year marked the second edition of the full Sámi-language workshop, spotlighting the voices and stories of young Indigenous filmmakers from Northern Norway.

In the week leading up to NUFF, Tvibit also hosted the Palarctic program—an international initiative bringing together young filmmakers from Norway and Palestine. Over the course of two weeks, six participants worked side-by-side to develop story ideas and pitch film concepts, before joining the NUFF workshop to collaborate on a short film. The program fostered creative exchange, cultural understanding, and new friendships, offering a powerful reminder of the role storytelling plays across borders and contexts.

But perhaps the most powerful aspect of NUFF is what happens off-screen: friendships formed, ideas exchanged, and confidence built. Whether you're a first-time filmmaker or a returning mentor, NUFF is a place where stories take root and futures begin.

As we look back on NUFF 2025, one thing is clear: the future of film is in good hands.
